If you like making new friends and keeping in touch with “old” ones, then this ministry is for you. On the first and third Sunday of each month our team gathers in the Missions Room to send letters, make phone calls, make doorstep outreach visits, and sign birthday cards. Guests at Central Baptist are contacted very shortly after their first visit by our Deacon team and by our G.O. Ministry team. Shut-ins, nursing home and assisted living residents, and those in the hospital also receive cards, calls or visits during the week. Some of our team members participate in Tele-Care in which members are called, in rotation, for a “check-up” just to see how they are doing. If you like sharing your faith or showing your concern for guests and members alike, then G.O. ministry may be the right place for you to serve. Since we don’t meet near certain holidays, always make sure to check the church calendar before showing up.
In 1959, the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention (now the North American Mission Board) became involved in helping churches begin adult literacy ministries. Thirty-Two million adults in the U.S. are functional non-readers, so there is still a need for this ministry. In 2014, Central Baptist Church started an adult literacy ministry for adults in the Johnson City, TN area.
The adult literacy program is operated out of the Central Baptist Annex and provides reading, writing, and spelling instruction to adults who cannot read or only have beginning reading skills. Trained volunteer tutors offer one-on-one instruction geared to meeting the needs of each student. Classes meet one day per week for an hour during the daytime hours. Classes are available Monday – Friday. Days and times of instruction are flexible. Classes and instructional materials are available at no cost.
If you would like more information about the adult literacy program please contact Central Baptist at 926-7121 or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. All inquiries are confidential.
